Sealed Room I

Entrance to the pre-PCR area is gained through a ’seal’ of two rooms. Before entering the first room – Sealed Room I – shoes, jackets and bags must be removed. Inside Sealed Room I, all clothes excluding underwear are removed. It is important to ensure that the clothes either have not previously been worn in a molecular genetics lab or have been freshly washed, as DNA-molecules in the air fix themselves to clothes. Further, a shower must be taken before entering the pre-PCR area in order to remove, as far as possible, any skin and hair cells. A move from post-PCR into the pre-PCR area is only allowed after a day’s absence, a shower and a change of clothes, to avoid transfer of modern DNA molecules into the aDNA laboratory.

All objects which are to be taken into the aDNA laboratory must first be cleansed with soapy water and sodium hypochloride, packed in sealed plastic bags in Sealed Room I and finally unpacked in the UV room and exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
