UV Room

All objects that are to be transferred into the pre-PCR laboratory must, following surface cleansing, be submitted to UV light for 30-45 minutes from all sides to guard against surface contamination. All sample materials are included in this process and they will only be worked on after UV treatment in the Sample Preparation and Cutting Room.

A particularly sensitive point in the analysis of ancient DNA is the use of DNA-free water, as tap water and commercially available water is not free from DNA molecules. In order to decontaminate the water, it is placed in 25 litre containers and submitted to 24 hours of ultraviolet irradiation under a sealed UV lamp. For the cleaning of the surfaces or laboratory instruments, UV irradiated osmosis water is used. The preparation of reagents for extraction and PCR is achieved with specially manufactured UV treated HPLC water that is at the necessary level of cleanliness for the sensitive extraction and amplification steps.
