Projects of the Environmental Geochemistry Group

o Analytical Geochemistry:

Current Projects:

Interdisciplinary Research Training Group Program ("Graduiertenkolleg") on "Trace analysis of elemental species:
Development of methods and applications"

1. PhD thesis project: "Fate of stable Hg isotopes added to a municipal waste landfill"
2. PhD thesis project: "Spatially resolved speciation of heavy metals in solid environmental samples by micro X-ray absorption fine structure spectrometry (µ-XAFS)"

Project A7 of SFB 641 "The Tropospheric Ice Phase (TROPICE)", PhD thesis project "Nanotomography and spektroscopy of solid inclusions in atmospheric ice particles"

Application of various synchrotron-based methods, in particular (i) microtomography at the new SLS-beamline MS-Tomo, (ii) flourescence tomography for 3-D microanalysis of trace elements in solid matrices at the new ESRF-beamline ID18F in cooperation with MiTAC Antwerp, and (iii) XAFS-imaging at the new beamline SUL-ANKA.

o Modeling:

Thermodynamic equilibrium modeling of particle-water interaction in the whole sorption continuum (adsorption, ion exchange, and solid solution) of trace elements in natural and engineered environments using the code GEMS

Project just finished: DFG-Project Ke508/6 "Adsorption by goethite of As and Se at elevated temperatures" (Abstract)

Project just started: DFG-Project Ke508/13-1 "Solid solution - aqueous solution equilibrium modeling of the ternary Mg-Ni-Fe/Al hydrotalcite series"

o Geochemical Engineering:

Evaluation of pollutant immobilization measures by using reservoir minerals (oxides, silicates, cement minerals)

Development of a fluid migration model at the pore scale using lattice Boltzmann-methods and nanotomography data

Project just finished: BMBF-Project "Sickerwasserprognose", Teilprojekt "Simulation der Sekundärmineralbildung in mineralischen Reststoffen und Bodenschichten in Kontakt mit Sickerwasser"
