Matthias
was born in Würzburg,
the capital of Lower Franconia. He studied Mineralogy at the University
of Würzburg (B.Sc., 1992) and the University of Göttingen (M.Sc.,1996),
followed by Ph.D. at Harvard University (USA, 2001). After postdoctoral
research at Utrecht University (The Netherlands, 2000-2004), he moved
to Mainz in October 2004.
His main research interest is to understand the evolution of the crust-mantle
system and the processes occurring at plate boundaries, with a combination
of igneous petrology and geochemistry. In particular, his interests include
melting processes at mid-ocean ridges and the formation, evolution, and
later recycling of continental crust. He is especially interested in deciphering
the information that the elemental abundances and isotopic ratios of rocks
that are associated with these processes contain. His work on tectonic
processes in the Archean has given him an interest in further improving
existing quantitative models relevant to partial melting in Archean subduction
zones in order to advance our understanding of the formation of the continental
crust. He looks forward to investigating other areas of igneous petrology,
including studies of kinetics and melt-rock reactions.
