Born in Yorkshire, England, Steve studied Geology at the University of Southampton (England, 1979), followed by M.Sc. at the Memorial University of Newfoundland (Canada, 1982), and Ph.D. at the University of Tasmania (Australia, 1986). After postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institut für Chemie (Mainz, 1986-1990), he moved to the University of Göttingen (1990-2000), and then the University of Greifswald (2000-2003) before moving to Mainz in September 2003.
His main research interests include the melting processes that lead to the production of volcanic melts, particularly alkaline melts, trace element abundances in igneous and metamorphic rocks and minerals, subduction zone processes, petrology and tectonics during the first half of the Earth’s history, and the petrology of the mantle and melting processes in rift settings. Recent work has centred on the in-situ analysis of trace elements in minerals by Laser-ICP-MS and ion-probe, particularly applied to subduction processes and melt generation in the mantle.
Steve was awarded the Heinz-Maier-Leibniz Prize of the German Science Foundation (DFG) in 1992, and the V.M.Goldschmidt Prize by the German Mineralogical Society in 1995. A project on melting processes in mantle veins was funded by the Gerhard Hess Programm of the DFG between 1992 and 1998. He has been chief editor of the international journal Lithos since 1997, and is a fellow of the Geological Association of Canada, and a member of the Geochemical Society, the German Mineralogical Society (DMG), the the Mineralogical Society of London and the American Geophysical Union.
