Inhalt
This seminar for German students at the University of Mainz’s Pedagogical Institute will consist of eight contact hours and will take place in the period 27th-29th June, RW 6. The course will focus primarily on the work of Brazilian educationist Paulo Freire and the Italians, Antonio Gramsci and Don Lorenzo Milani, with special reference to their ideas that are of relevance to education. Some preliminary discussion will center around the critical pedagogy movement with reference to the work of the Frankfurt School, John Dewey, bell hooks, Henry Giroux, Michael Apple, Peter McLaren, Roger Simon, Antonia Darder, Maxine Greene and Kathleen Weiler. I will demonstrate the importance of Gramsci’s, Milani’s and Freire’s thinking with respect to many contemporary exponents of critical pedagogy in North America, notably Apple, Giroux, hooks, Greene, McLaren and Darder.
The seminar would then focus on first Gramsci and later, Milani and Freire. The German students will make use of the newly published German translation of my 1999 book on Gramsci and Freire (Zed Books, London. Dr Uwe Hirschfeld carried out the translation. They will also have to read Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed, probably in German translation and the School of Barbiana’s (Including Lorenzo Milani) Lettera a Una Professoressa, in English translation.
