Final Report of the Arbore Food Aid Project | Print |

 Berlin and Mainz, December 2005

The Arbore Food Aid Project has been completed in November 2003. It was organised in two distribution phases. The first distribution of 6,5 kg of maize per person from April to May 2003 (supervised by Mr Girke) and a second distribution of 15 kg of maize per person (supervised by Mrs Gabbert) from June to July 2003. Further distributions were not necessary because the first maize had ripened in August.

The governmental institutions have not only agreed to the distributions but have expressed their gratitude to everybody who has made help possible. In this emergency case help for Arbore could not have been organised otherwise.

The emergency aid was provided in form of a FFD ( Free Food Distribution ). A separate food for work -program would not have been feasible, as it would have prevented the Arbore from working on their fields from June to August to secure the next harvest. From January to May all Arbore had been working on the fields anyway, initially for the first sowing, and after the flooding in the desperate attempt to rescue the second sowing.

At the same time the Arbore organized the feat of collecting, buying and transporting the maize from the different markets, of loading and unloading the trucks and of guarding and distributing the maize by themselves. Our task was primarily the administration of the finances, supervision of all working stages and handling of the bureaucratic necessities, as well as guaranteeing the required mobility and quick-response capacity by use of our automobile.
