Degree Seeking Applicants
If you want to study at the University of Mainz, here is some information to help you to apply.
1. Deadlines for Admission
restricted admission courses (numerus clausus):
- winter semester: July 15
- summer semester: January 15
non-restricted courses of study:
- winter semester: September 01
- summer semester: March 01
Applications must have reached the university by that date. Incomplete application dossiers or incomplete application forms will not be accepted.
2. Certification of Recognition / Validation of Foreign Certificates
We will only accept applications of foreign students including a certification of recognition / validation of the application documents submitted. You may download the required form ("Application for the Recognition /Validation of Foreign Certificates") under the link on the right side.
The certificate of recognition / validation will be issued only after 50 Euro were transfered to our account (no checks, credit cards or banknotes are accepted). Please note that copies of documents must be properly translated and officially certified.
3. Application Papers (only officially certified copies)
Certification of recognition / validation:
- The certification of recognition / validation is only accepted together with the legalized documents named in the certification.
School:
- Officially certified copy of the high school diploma / school leaving certificate of the secondary school in the original language including transcripts (lists of grades and subjects)
- Officially certified translations of the high school diploma/leaving certificate of the secondary school into German or English including transcripts (translations are not necessary for German, English and French certificates)
- Where applicable, officially certified copy of the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung) and extension exams (Erweiterungsprüfungen) See also: http://www.anabin.de/
University:
- Officially certified copies of all university admissions exams in the original language and certified translation into German or English (translations are not necessary for German, English and French certificates)
- Officially certified copies of transcripts and / or enrolment certificate indicating the applicant's academic standing
- Officially certified translations of transcripts and / or enrolment certificate indicating the applicant's academic standing (translations are not necessary for German, English and French certificates)
- Officially certified copies of any university degree received (e.g. Bachelor, Master) and translations of these certificates (translations for English and French certificates are not necessary)
Other:
- Complete curriculum vitae up to the time of application
- Three International Reply Coupons or equivalent in German postage stamps (no checks or banknotes)
- Further papers according to admission information (blue paper)
4. Language Requirements
Studying without a preparatory German course
If you apply to study without a preparatory German course - i.e. you have answered question 11 of the 'application form for admission to studies for foreign applicants' (see download) with NO - you need to submit the following certificates:
- an officially certified copy of the passed DSH-2-exam or an equivalent
The following are recognized as equivalent of a passed DSH-2:

- Deutsches Sprachdiplom [Stufe II]
- Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung [ZOP] of the Goethe-Institut
- Kleines deutsches Sprachdiplom of the "Goethe-Institut im Auftrag der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München"
- Großes deutsches Sprachdiplom of the "Goethe-Institut im Auftrag der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München"
- TestDaF with the result 4 x 4 (enrollment under certain conditions) or better (2 x 5 and 2 x 4 or better results in an unconditional enrollment)
- the exam from the preparatory course (Feststellungsprüfung) of a German preparatory college (Studienkolleg) [see chapter German Language Test]) or
- officially certified proof of German language proficiency at the advanced level, i.e. a completed "Oberstufe" with an original advisory certificate of the Fremdsprachenzentrum (Center of Foreign Languages) of the University of Mainz.
Studying with a preparatory German course
If you apply for studies with a preparatory German course - i.e. you have answered question 11 of the 'application form for admission to studies for foreign applicants' (see download) with YES - you need to submit the following certificate:
- officially certified proof of German language proficiency: intermediate level, i.e. a completed "Mittelstufe I" with at least 65 % of the maximum grade achieved. Language certificates will only be accepted if they are not older than 1 year.
Studying with a preparatory course (Studienkolleg)
If you apply for studies with a preparatory course (Studienkolleg) - i.e. you have answered question 10.1 / 10.2 of the 'application form for admission to studies for foreign applicants' (see download) with YES- you need to submit the following certificate:
- officially certified proof of German language proficiency: intermediate level i.e. a completed "Mittelstufe I" with at least 65% of the maximum grade achieved. Language certificates will only be accepted if they are not older than 1 year. Completed application form.
5. Official Certification
In Germany, official certifications of copies may be issued by the following authorities: office of the mayor or chief magistrate, civic authorities (town hall), courts, notaries.
Problems may arise with the certification of the papers issued in languages other than German or English. In such cases applicants should contact their embassy or consulate for the certification of their documents.
Official certifications may not be issued by the following institutions: charitable institutions, parish offices, translators, health insurers, banks, building societies, students' unions etc.
Schools, "Studienkollegien" (preparatory colleges) and universities may only certify their own certificates.
In countries other than Germany, the following offices are authorized to issue official certifications: the diplomatic missions of the Federal Republic of Germany or the authorities in the respective country which are authorized to issue certifications.
A copy of an officially certified copy must be certified again.
In addition, colour copies must be certified by a raised (embossed) seal of a public authority. In this case the original certificates have to be shown upon matriculation.
6. Original Diplomas / Certificates
Original diplomas / certificates should only be submitted upon request in person or by registered mail; the university is not liable for loss of or damage to documents mailed without request.
