Mainz University is one of the oldest universities in Germany. It was founded in 1477. Today, it has almost 34.000 enrolled students, among them about 4800 foreign students. Approximately 230 foreign students come to Mainz each year under the ERASMUS programme; and in addition, there are students coming from our partner universities in Japan, Colombia, the United States etc. Right now, Mainz University has more than 230 partner universities.
Johannes-Gutenberg-University offers many different courses of study ranging from the Natural Sciences, the Humanities, and Economic Sciences to the Arts and Sports. The university is divided into departments, each of which is divided again into institutes or seminaries. With the exception of the Department for Applied Linguistics and Cultural Science (FASK) at Germersheim, all departments are located on the central campus or in downtown Mainz. On campus, there are also two bookstores, several stationery shops, a small super market, a post office, a number of dining halls and cafeterias, several restaurants, a large sports facility, an indoor pool, and a very noteworthy botanical garden.
