Foundations – A Commitment to the Future of the Knowledge Society
Foundations are gaining importance in Germany as well. At the same time, the education and academic sector is increasingly benefiting from this type of societal commitment. Foundations provide a broad spectrum of opportunities to advance science and research, teaching and learning. Anyone looking for support for a specific project or to promote outstanding achievement would do well to obtain a list of the smaller foundations as well – unexpected opportunities are often found there. Conversely, a foundation can offer citizens, institutions and companies the opportunity to ensure targeted, long-term support, even with small contributions.
The Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation
The Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation was founded in 2004 under the auspices of the prime minister of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Kurt Beck. It administers all of the university’s independent foundations and has only two direct charitable purposes: the advancement of research, teaching and learning, and continuing education and the promotion of the arts at Johannes Gutenberg University.
Opportunities to support individual fields of study
In addition to the major foundations’ multidisciplinary grants and programs to support research, large and small foundations alike provide special support opportunities for individual fields of study. The spectrum ranges from grants for undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies to prizes, awards and printing-cost subsidies to funding entire research projects.
