Field of Study

The field of Indology comprises the study of the Indo-Asiatic cultures, including the respective languages, literature, and religions. The region where these cultures can be found stretches from the geographical centre of South Asia, namely from India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Himalayan countries to Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet, Central Asia, China, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Indology focuses on the study of a complex cultural blending process from its historical beginnings to modern times. The study of the classical world contributes to a better understanding of the present and vice versa.

At the beginning of their studies, students must learn at least three languages, one for each of the following three linguistic periods: an ancient Indian language (emphasis placed on classical Sanskrit), a Middle Indian language (primarily Pali), and a modern Indian language (Hindi/Urdu, or Singhalese, as the most common language). A better understanding of the main Indological subjects, above all literature and the history of religions, is only possible on the basis of sound Language competence. The religious literatures of Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as the secular literature of the classical world and the poetry and prose of the present, are among the most important sources accessible by means of philology. During the course of study, students learn to read and interpret original works of Indian literature covering a period of 3,500 years, starting with the sacrificial hymns of Rig-Veda, through the doctrines of Buddha to modern short stories, and to see these works against the background of their larger cultural and historical context.

Employment Opportunities

A degree in this subject can lead to employment opportunities in the following areas and institutions: foreign service, libraries, adult education, research institutions, universities and institutes of higher education, international cultural organisations, media, museums, publishing houses, translation agencies and editorial departments.

It is advisable for students to contact potential employers during their studies and to acquire career-oriented skills, for example, through an unpaid internship.
