German Language Courses
The University of Mainz offers no German language courses for beginners as it requires sufficient German skills at the time of application. Exceptions to the rule exist for applicants to the International Degrees, which are taught in a language other than German and sometimes for doctoral studies. German language skills can be gained in your native country or in Germany.
German Courses in your Native Country
German skills can be gained in your native country at either the universities or at German cultural institutes and offices of the Goethe Institute. The German embassy in your home country can provide more detailed information.
German Courses in Germany
In Germany, German language courses are offered by various public and private institutions. It is recommended that you take an intensive course of at least 20 class hours a week to prepare for your studies in Germany. Such courses are offered through the following institutes:
- Institutes of higher education summer courses, i.e. the International Summer Course at the University of Mainz.
- “Volkshochschulen” (adult education centers), which offer classes for adults and youth. In most university towns, they offer German courses for foreign applicants and students. Often this is in co-operation with the universities.
- Goethe-Institutes
- Private language institutes can be found over the internet when you enter the word “Deutschkurse” in a search engine.
