Costs and Financing your Studies
During your studies, you will accrue living expenses in addition to those related to your studies themselves.
Living Expenses

Thus, you must reckon with yearly expenses of 7,200.00 Euros. For your complete studies, which depending on your subjects last between 5 to 6 years, you will require approximately 36,000 – 43.200 Euros. You must be able to prove to the “Auslandsbehörde” (foreign authorities) that you have the appropriate funding to finance the duration of your stay in Germany without requiring public assistance.
How much money do I need for my first month in Mainz?
Please make sure that at the time of arrival you have either enough cash or are able to access enough cash by using an internationally recognized debit card. During the first month in Mainz you will require approximately 1,600.00 Euros as there are certain one time costs, i.e. rent deposit or your “Semesterbeitrag” (semester student fees).
Semester Student Fees
Every semester, students of the University of Mainz are required to pay a fee of 190 Euros (Winter semester 2007/08). This semester fee is not to be confused with tuition as tuition fees do not exist in the Rhineland – Palatinate at present. Included in your semester student fees is the “Semesterticket” (transportation card), which allows students to use public transportation in Mainz and its surroundings at no extra cost.
“Studienkonten” (Student Accounts) and Tuition Fees
Student accounts are implemented in the Rhineland-Palatinate from which each registered semester will be deducted. For your first degree, tuition fees will still not be required, unless your studies last longer than twice the standard period of studies. At present, only the degrees Executive Master of Business Administration, Media Law, Master of Epidemiology and Psychological Psychotherapy claim tuition fees.
Financing
The University of Mainz does not have scholarships for international students. You must finance your studies yourself. In general, international students who have a “Aufenthaltsbewilligung” (residence permit) for the purpose of studies in their passport, are not allowed to work in Germany. Should work be permitted for either 90 full days or 180 part-time days, this will be mentioned in your passport. These work days do not require work permission. Due to these restrictions, it is of utmost importance that you secure the financing for your studies in your native country.
