Co-operation Agreements

In conducting its research, the Johannes Gutenberg University forges close links with partners from the fields of science, business and culture. Besides collaboration with a multitude of national and international institutes, research facilities and corporations, particular emphasis is given to regional integration with strategically important partners, such as the two Max Planck Institutes on the campus and the Darmstadt-based Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research.

The Johannes Gutenberg University’s intensive regional networking is also reflected in its involvement in the Mainz Scientific Alliance. This close cooperation helped the town of Mainz obtain the title City of Science 2011, which it received in April 2010 from the Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany.

The Mainz Max Planck Institutes

• Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry which focuses on atmospheric chemistry, biogeochemistry, geochemistry, cosmochemistry and the physics and chemistry of clouds
• Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research which focuses on the chemical and physical properties of polymers and basic research for new uses in electronics, biomedicine, packaging materials and vehicle manufacturing

In line with the focus of the research undertaken, Departments 08 (Physics, Mathematics and Computer Sciences) and 09 (Chemistry, Pharmaceutics and Geosciences) have in particular been in close contact with the two Max Planck Institutes in Mainz. The close cooperation is not only demonstrated by joint applications for the Federation and State Initiative for Excellence but is also clearly evident in the establishment of the Max Planck Graduate Center. In June 2009, the Max Planck Graduate Center was established in association with the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, in order to facilitate joint doctoral projects between the university and the Max Planck Institutes and to attract excellent doctoral students to the graduate programme based on the quality of the academic offers.
