Hosting agreement for the implementation of a research project

If you are a citizen of a non-EU country and you plan to conduct research at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, there are two different procedures that you can use to obtain a residence permit pursuant to § 20 AufenthG:

1. Procedure: Conclusion of a hosting agreement BEFORE arrival in Germany

  1. The host institution completes a "hosting agreement for the implementation of a research project" form.
  2. The completed form is sent to the JGU International Office, together with all necessary documentation and references.
  3. The JGU International Office verifies that all formal requirements have been met (qualifications and pay). 
  4. The JGU International Office signs the hosting agreement and forwards it to you. 
  5. You sign the hosting agreement, submit it to Germany's diplomatic mission abroad, and apply for an entry visa.
  6. On arrival in Germany, you contact the relevant Foreigners Registration Authority office to convert your visa to a residence permit pursuant to § 20 AufenthG.

2. Procedure: Conclusion of a hosting agreement AFTER arrival in Germany

  1. The host institution instructs the JGU International Office to check in advance that all requirements have been met (qualifications and pay).
  2. If all requirements have been met, the host institution will send you a letter inviting you to enter into a "hosting agreement for the implementation a research project."
  3. You conclude the appropriate agreements with the JGU / the host institution.
  4. The host institution completes a "hosting agreement for the implementation a research project" form. 
  5. The completed form is sent to the JGU International Office, together with all necessary documentation and references.
  6. The JGU International Office signs the hosting agreement and forwards it to you. 
    1. current or future place of residence: Mainz
      If the researcher is currently living in Mainz or is going to take residence in Mainz, the Conclusion of a hosting agreement will be send to the Foreigners Registration Authority directly by the International Offce of JGU. The researcher will contact the International Office regarding the appointment with the Foreigners Registration Authority. 
    2. current or future place of residence: any other city or area than Mainz
      If the researcher is currently living or is going to live in another city or area than Mainz, she / he 
      1. will receive a signed Conclusion of the hosting agreement
      2. has to contact the relevant Foreign Registration Authority
      3. has to present the Conclusion of the hosting agreement to this authority
      4. has the current residence permit converted to a residence permit pursuant to § 20 AufenthG.
