State Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) received the Rhineland-Palatinate Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence in 2010 for its concept of strategic alignment of teaching and the further development of teaching skills. This concept is based on a comprehensive higher education didactics approach, which is to be initially tested in the subjects of Biology, German Studies, and History, to be then gradually extended to all faculties within JGU. The goals are the development of teaching skills through subject didactics courses and the promotion of a disciplinary and interdisciplinary peer-group exchange on matters related to teaching.
The program has a duration of two years and basically consists of the following three elements:
- According to the subject they teach, teaching staff are introduced in seminars to the principles of higher education didactics as well as given the opportunity to explore specific subject didactics in depth.
- Following on from this, workshops offer the opportunity of more in-depth exchange within each discipline, as well as featuring practical exercises (e.g. presentation training).
- The program is rounded off by mutual course visits within groups of teachers. These groups of teachers comprise teaching staff from the participating subjects and they receive appropriate higher education didactics mentoring (peer group coaching).
