The President
Professor Dr. Georg Krausch
The current President of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Professor Dr. Georg Krausch, was appointed on 1 April 2007.
Born in 1961, Professor Krausch studied Physics at the University of Konstanz. After completing his doctorate and habilitation, he was Professor of Physical Chemistry at the Ludwig Maximilans University in Munich from 1996 to 1998. In 1998, he was appointed to the Chair of Physical Chemistry at Bayreuth University.
Professor Krausch's excellent academic qualifications are clearly demonstrated by the more than 160 publications he has produced in his field, his numerous successful funding applications and visiting fellowships at other research institutions, activities as an editor, memberships of professional associations and work as a peer reviewer. From 2003, he was Vice President of Bayreuth University responsible for the sector Research and Young Academics.
The President presides over the University and acts as its external representative. The President is accountable to the Senate, the decisions of which he coordinates and implements. He allocates the funds and posts that have been approved by the Senate (under the regulations set out in Art. 79, Section 2, Subsection 1 of the German Higher Education Act) to the various financed departments. It is the right of the President to ensure that he is informed of all matters that concern the University and to participate (in an advisory capacity) in all meetings of University committees. He also has the authority to require University bodies and institutions to consult and reach decisions on specific issues. In situations in which time is of the essence and the responsible body or institution is unable to reach a resolution, the President can intervene and himself specify a preliminary decision. The President is obligated to overturn any decisions or measures of University bodies that violate statutes or contravene the principles of cost effectiveness. The President is nominated by the University Council and appointed by the Senate. The President remains in office for six years, thereafter he/she can be voted out or reappointed.
