With about 37,000 students from about 130 nations, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the ten largest universities in Germany. Being the only comprehensive university in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, JGU combines almost all academic disciplines under one roof, including the Mainz University Medical Center, the School of Music, and the Mainz Academy of Arts. This is unique in the German academic landscape. With 84 fields of study and a total of 219 degree courses, including 95 Bachelor’s and 101 Master’s degree programs, JGU offers an extraordinarily broad range of courses. With these, the University covers all academic disciplines of a comprehensive university. TEACHING AT MAINZ UNIVERSITY

Effective and successful learning needs quality and excellence in teaching. To ensure and further enhance the quality of teaching at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the University Senate established the Gutenberg Teaching Council (GTC) in November 2010. With the establishment of the GTC, Mainz University lives up to its self-conception grounded in its mission statement and its teaching strategy: research and teaching are of equal rank and it is JGU's aim to obtain optimum and excellent performance in both areas. Irrespective of the responsibility of the JGU faculties to secure and organize their course offerings, the Gutenberg Teaching Council aims at the promotion and further development of teaching and academic teaching competence at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz while taking into account its research orientation, its interdisciplinary and international character, and its professional orientation. It shall also make well-founded academic contributions to the further development and improvement of course structures and study conditions at JGU.
