Visa

Make sure you find out in good time which visa conditions apply for you. You can do that either at the Auswärtiges Amt or the nearest German Embassy or Consulate in your home country.

Possibly you will need an Applicant’s Visa, since you cannot study in Germany with a tourist visa! Without a proper visa, you cannot be enrolled at this university, and without enrolment, you will not receive a residence permit and will have to leave the country again! Please do not rely on hearsay as to whether or not you need a visa.

Citizens of the following countries currently do not need a visa to enter the country:

  • all 25 EU countries
  • all EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland)
  • Citizens of Australia, Israel, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the United States.

Citizens of these countries will receive a residence permit when registering with the Alien Registration Office.

Foreign students requiring a visa to study in Mainz will have to append two copies of the completed Confirmation of Application form to their application for a place of study. Once it is stamped and returned to you by International Admissions, this form will allow you to apply for an Applicant’s Visa from the German consulate or embassy in your home country.

Detailed information on residence rights can be found under Arbeits- und Aufenthaltsrecht to the right, or on the website of the German Federal Foreign Office.
