University Professor Dr. JAIRO SINOVA
Faculty 08 - Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Science - Institute of Physics
University Professor Dr. Jairo Sinova On January 1, 2014, Jairo Sinova was appointed University Professor with tenure at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As an Alexander von Humboldt Professor, he assumes the Professorship of Theoretical Physics. The emphasis of his research lies in the area of spintronics in semiconductors and metals. His theoretical prediction and experimental demonstration of the existence of the intrinsic Spin Hall Effect is regarded as a milestone in semiconductor physics.

University Professor Dr. Claudia Landwehr On November 12, 2013, Claudia Landwehr was appointed University Professor with tenure at the Institute of Political Science at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her work focuses on the field of politics and economics and her teaching and research concentrates on the interaction between political institutions and decisions on the one hand and economic developments and processes on the other hand.

Faculty 06 - Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies - Polish Studies
University Professor Dr. Renata Makarska On November 12, 2013, Renata Makarska was appointed University Professor with tenure for Polish Studies: Language, Culture, and Translation at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her teaching and research is especially concerned with the themes of west Slavic literature in the 20th and 21st centuries, exile and migrant literature, inter- and transculturality, minority discourse, and translation theory.

University Professor Dr. Eva Wolf On November 12, 2013, Eva Wolf was appointed University Professor with tenure for Structural Biology at the Institute of General Botany at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. In addition, she heads the research group "Circadian clocks as gene regulatory systems" at the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB).
Junior Professor Dr. OLIVER ČULO
Faculty 06 - Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Cultural Studies - Intercultural German Studies
Junior Professor Dr. Oliver Čulo On October 31, 2013, Oliver Čulo was appointed Junior Professor of Translation-relevant Linguistics. His research focuses in particular on cognitive linguistics in general as well as on and frame semantics and the impact of the increasing role of technology in translation.

Junior Professor Dr. Manuel Förster On October 1, 2013, Manuel Förster was appointed Junior Professor of Economics and Business Education at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His work is specifically dedicated to the areas of implementation research, empirical educational research, teacher professionalism and expertise as well as economics competence modeling.

Junior Professor Dr. Verena Hahn Verena Hahn was appointed Junior Professor of Occupational Health Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The focus of her research lies in the areas of work stress, recreation, and work-life balance.

Faculty 05 - Philosophy and Philology - Department of English and Linguistics
Junior Professor Dr. Svenja Kranich On October 1, 2013, Svenja Kranich was appointed Junior Professor of English Linguistics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. She works at the Department of English and Linguistics where she is studying the contrasts in the pragmatics of English and German texts and the resultant consequences for translation, together with recent linguistic changes in English. Her particular interest here is evaluative lexis and modality.

University Professor Dr. Thomas Speck On October 1, 2013, Thomas Speck was appointed University Professor with tenure of Theory of Condensed Matter at the Institute of Physics of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His research within the Condensed Matter working group KOMET focuses on dynamics, especially with respect to supercooled liquids and driven colloidal systems.
University Professor Dr. SYLVIA THIELE - Faculty 05 - Philosophy and Philology - Department of Romance Studies
University Professor Dr. Sylvia Thiele On October 1, 2013, Sylvia Thiele was appointed University Professor with tenure for Didactics of Romance Languages/Literature at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her teaching and research is concerned with the topics of language instruction and learning research, language acquisition research, the didactics of language and literature in French, Italian, and Spanish, the didactics of multilingualism, the design of bilingual teaching modules as well as general romance language linguistics.

Junior Professor Dr. Cornelia Wrzus

On October 1, 2013, Cornelia Wrzus was appointed Junior Professor for Personality Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her research is especially devoted to the topic of the interrelationship between the two fields of personality and developmental psychology.

University Professor Dr. Matthias Birkner On September 27, 2013, Matthias Birkner was appointed University Professor with tenure of Probability Theory at the Institute of Mathematics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His research interests lie in the field of stochastic processes and their applications. Technical topics of his work are interacting and branching particle systems and their measurable limits, large deviations, and coalescence processes.

University Professor Dr. Andreas Diefenbach On September 1, 2013, Andreas Diefenbach was appointed University Professor with tenure at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, where he became Director of the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Hygiene. His research work focuses on the question of how the innate immune system recognizes infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria.

His work and research cover both philosophy didactics as a scientific and practical teaching discipline and philosophical research in historical and systematic perspective.

Juniorprof. Dr. Markus Mezger

On June 1, 2013, Markus Mezger was appointed Junior Professor for X-ray structure analysis at the Institute of Physics of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As a member of the Condensed Matter Theory Group (KOMET), he is primarily concerned with the study of molecular structure and the dynamics of soft materials at interfaces.

University Professor Dr. Helle Ulrich On May 29, 2013, Helle Ulrich was appointed University Professor with tenure for Molecular Biology of Genome Stability in the Faculty of Biology of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. For the time being, she assumes the post of Scientific Director of the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), where Ulrich is especially concerned with questions of genome stability.

Professor Dr. Kurt Aulenbacher On May 1, 2013, Kurt Aulenbacher was appointed University Professor with tenure at the Institute of Nuclear Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He is also undertaking the management of the "Accelerators and integrated detectors" section at the Helmholtz Institute Mainz. His research interests include accelerator and spin-polatized radiation research.

Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michèle Wessa On May 1, 2013, Michèle Wessa was appointed University Professor with tenure for Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology at the Institute of Psychology of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Her research focus is the exploration of neurological and psychological mechanisms that contribute to the development of mental disorders, particularly bipolar disorder.

University Professor Dr. Christopher Koch On April 1, 2013, Christopher Koch was appointed University Professor with tenure for Business Administration, with specialization in Corporate Governance, at the Faculty of Law, Management and Economics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Here he will be employing empirical methods to analyze, in particular, aspects of auditing and corporate governance.

His most recent research is devoted to developing new algorithms for quantum lattice systems and looking at special phases of matter that may be employed in quantum computers.

University Professor Alan Rendall, Ph.D. On April 1, 2013, Alan Rendall was appointed University Professor with tenure for Analysis at the Institute of Mathematics of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His current research is focused on applying the theory of differential equations to problems in biology.
University Professor Dr. PATRICK WINDPASSINGER

University Professor Dr. Patrick Windpassinger On April 1, 2013, Patrick Windpassinger was appointed University Professor with tenure in Experimental Quantum Optics and Quantum Information at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His research team, part of the QUANTUM group at the Institute of Physics, is studying the potential of ultracold quantum gases for use as quantum memory, quantum sensors, and quantum simulators.

University Professor Dr. Christina Bannier On March 1, 2013, Christina Bannier was appointed University Professor with tenure for Corporate Finance at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. As a member of the Gutenberg School of Management and Economics, her interests include credit ratings, special forms of external financing, and management remuneration.

Junior Professor Dr. Martin Rettenberger On February 1, 2013, Martin Rettenberger was appointed Junior Professor for Forensic Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The focus of his research is on the topics of the prognosis of criminal behavior and risk management of violent and sexual offenders. He also acts as an expert witness in forensic psychology.

Junior Professor Dr. Matthias Schott On February 1, 2013, Matthias Schott was appointed Junior Professor for Experimental Particle Physics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He has also been awarded a Lichtenberg Professorship at the Institute of Physics and is a Fellow of the Gutenberg Research College. His research mainly focuses on the question of what determines the mass of the fundamental components of matter postulated in the standard model of particle physics.

As a member of the Condensed Matter Theory Group KOMET, his particular interests include Hamiltonian engineering and quantum simulations as well as numerical methods, e.g., density matrix renormalization groups and tensor networks.
