Gender Affairs and Equal Opportunity

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz has been dedicated to the advancement of women for over two decades. The success of the current programs is manifest in the high number of women

  • who obtain doctoral degrees at JGU (JGU: 51%, federal average: 44%),
  • who become junior professors (JGU: 45%, federal average: 37%),
  • who receive their postdoctoral lecturing qualifications (JGU: 33%, federal average: 24%).

The fraction of female professors at JGU is slightly above the federal average (JGU: 22%, national average: 18%). Within the last four years, the share of newly-appointed female professors has continuously been on the rise to reach 38% in 2010 (federal average 2010: 27%).

JGU has been honored three times for its gender equality efforts with the Total E-Quality Label in 2005, 2008, and 2011.

In addition, the current university ranking of the Center of Excellence Women and Science (CEWS) has placed JGU into the leading group due to its proportion of women among students and doctoral candidates and its increase in the proportion of female professors.

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has also positively evaluated JGU on the basis of an intermediate report on the implementation of research-oriented gender equality standards in 2011.

One of the advantages of the existing gender equality program is that it takes into account the different career phases of young female researchers. In order to support women in the critical mid-career phase after having obtained their doctorate, JGU has established numerous mentoring and coaching programs in recent years. The Coaching Center for Young Women Researchers provides long-term support in the form of training and personal counsel. In addition, young women researchers benefit from individual mentoring in almost all subjects. There is also a pool of positions, specially created to promote women researchers, and a separate funding line as part of the JGU’s in-house research funding program.
