Support: endowments as a way of showing commitment to the future of the knowledge society

Endowments are becoming more and more important in Germany. In the process, the education and scientific sector is increasingly benefitting from this type of social engagement. This opens up a wide spectrum of funding possibilities for science and research, teaching and study. Those seeking support for a specific project or funding for some outstanding achievement are well advised to have a look at the range of foundations, even smaller ones, that are available – unexpected opportunities can often present themselves here.

Apart from the interdisciplinary scholarships and research funding programs available from the bigger foundations, there are special funding options available for individual disciplines too. This includes everything from study, doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships through prizes, awards and subsidies for printing costs right up to the financing of entire research projects.

The Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation

The Johannes Gutenberg University Foundation was created in 2004 under the patronage of Kurt Beck, minister-president of Rhineland Palatinate. It manages all non-independent foundations within the university and exclusively and directly follows non-profit goals.

Fully in keeping with the vision of the individual donors, the purpose of the non-independent foundations is to support the members and institutions of Johannes Gutenberg University, to fulfill their duties in terms of teaching and research not only within specific subjects, but also in an interdisciplinary manner. This is done, for example, by awarding prizes and scholarships to young scientists, promoting specific teaching activities and research projects as well as purchasing the necessary equipment and materials.

Mainz University Fund Foundation

The remit of the Mainz University Fund is to use earnings to support teaching and research within Johannes Gutenberg University and to contribute to the promotion of young talent. The Johannes Gutenberg University Prize may be awarded, for example, for dissertations that are considered particularly brilliant or for outstanding artistic achievements. Furthermore, the Willy Eberz Medal (for notable student engagement) and the prize "Jugend forscht" (Young Researcher) are awarded. Resources are distributed upon the request of the President of the university. The history of the Mainz University Fund and that of the university itself are inextricably linked with each other.
