Nobel laureates at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
The origins of the Nobel Foundation, established in 1900, can be traced back to the Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). In accordance with his will, the foundation’s Nobel Prize is awarded every year for outstanding achievements in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Peace Promotion, and Physiology/Medicine. The Nobel Prize was first awarded in 1901 and is conferred every year on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death.
