Honorary doctors of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
To mark the 60th anniversary of the reopening of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in 2006, the former French President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing received an honorary doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
In November 2010, film and theatre actor Mario Adorf was awarded an honorary doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz for his life's work. In Mario Adorf, JGU honored a figure who not only influenced German and European film history over the decades but who also played a major part in shaping the German theatre landscape after the Second World War.
Apart from the Academic Senate, the individual departments and institutes at the University of Mainz also award honorary doctorates to exceptional figures from, and representatives of, their respective subject area.
