Among German universities, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is on the places 9 to 14; in the field of natural sciences and mathematics, JGU ranks among the top eight.

Learning and Teaching

JGU looks forward to the winter semester 2012/2013 with more than 36,200 students from about 130 nations. With 84 fields of study and a total of 219 degree courses, including 95 Bachelor’s and 101 Master’s degree programs, JGU offers an extraordinarily broad range of courses.

Excellence Initiative

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) has been successful in the second round of the Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments to promote top-level research at German universities. The Joint Commission of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Science Council together with the relevant state and federal ministers gave their approval to the submitted proposals for the Cluster of Excellence on "Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter" (PRISMA) and the Graduate School of Excellence "MAterials Science IN MainZ" (MAINZ) with a total funding of some €50 million over the next five years.

Young Researchers

Every year, about 600 young academics (51 percent women) obtain a doctorate from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The University runs the Graduate School of Excellence MAINZ – Materials Science in Mainz and 18 other third-party funded research training groups.

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz maintains a network of 145 cooperations with partner universities on all continents. The University currently counts about 4,000 international students – which amounts to eleven percent of the overall student body.

Equal Opportunity

Women at JGU account for a particularly high proportion in the field of doctoral studies and degrees (JGU: 51 percent, German average: 44 percent), junior professorships (JGU: 45 percent, German average: 37 percent), and post-doctoral professorial qualifications (JGU: 33 percent, German average: 24 percent). The share of JGU women professors is also better than the national average (JGU: 22 percent, German average: 18 percent).

Staff

In 2010, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz was the largest employer in the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the second-largest employer of the federal state itself – with 10,750 personnel (inclusive of the University Medical Center staff), including 3,248 researchers (not including third-party funded personnel), among them 515 professors, in the more than 150 JGU institutes and clinics.

In national and international comparison, JGU's research achievement mirrors in continuously raising third-party funds. Third-party fund expenditurs excluding endowed professorships 2010: €86,663,344. The 2010 state grant for Mainz University excluding the University Medical Center* was €183,993,165. The 2010 state grant for the University Medical Center (research and teaching only, without third-party funds)* was was €85,606,851.
