By focusing on key research priorities, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) fulfills one of the essential requirements for international competitiveness – and does so with great success. Our particle physicists in the PRISMA++ Cluster of Excellence are world leaders in their field. JGU also plays a pioneering role in other disciplines, including the materials sciences, quantum and atomic physics, sustainable chemistry and polymer chemistry, the life sciences and translational medicine.

Together with Goethe University Frankfurt and the Technical University of Darmstadt, JGU forms the Rhine-Main Universities alliance (RMU). Starting in 2027, RMU will receive funding as a University of Excellence Consortium under the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. This achievement builds on the three universities’ outstanding success in the Clusters of Excellence funding line and the positive evaluation of their joint proposal titled “RMU EXCITE – Excellent. Collaborative. Transformative“.
