The Vice President for Learning and Teaching
Professor Dr. Mechthild Dreyer
The Vice President for Learning and Teaching is responsible for all aspects of learning and teaching as well as for helping academics combine family and career as well as for continuing academic education and training in the field of university teaching. Among other things, the Vice President for Learning and Teaching also deals with the fundamental aspects of the Higher Education Pact and the Teaching Quality Pact along with other learning and teaching support projects and is also in charge of library-related matters and the promotion of contacts between schools and the university.
Mechthild Dreyer, born 1955, studied Catholic theology, Philosophy, and Education at the University of Bonn, Germany. After graduating in Theology, she initially worked as a research associate at the Seminar for Christian Philosophy of Religion/Fundamental Theology at the University of Freiburg. She subsequently obtained a doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Bonn and went on to work as a research associate at the Seminar for Catholic Theology of the Free University of Berlin, later as a research assistant in the Department of Philosophy of the University of Bonn. In 1995, she was awarded a postdoctoral lecturing qualification in Philosophy by the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Bonn and acted as Vice Director of the Albertus Magnus Institute in Bonn until 1999, when she returned to Bonn University as an adjunct professor. A little later, she was appointed Professor of Philosophy, with a focus on Scholastic Philosophy, at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU).
Mechthild Dreyer has extensive and varied experience to call on in her role as Vice President thanks to her extensive involvement with university bodies and academic committees. She was Vice-Chair of the JGU University Council from 2004 to 2008 and Coordinator of the Research Center for Historical Cultural Studies Mainz-Trier from 2005 to 2008. From 2008 to 2010, Dreyer was a member of the Steering Committee of the Historical Cultural Studies Research Group at JGU and Dean of Faculty 05: Philosophy and Philology.
In January 2014, the University Senate re-elected Professor Dr. Mechthild Dreyer as Vice President for Learning and Teaching.
