Strategic Planning

The Strategic Planning staff unit was established in 2012 as a component of the institutional strategy of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU). Its objective is to reinforce overall university governance by the Senate, the University Management Board, and the University Council while ensuring that these liaise closely with the stakeholders in the various faculties, excellence centers. The Strategic Planning staff unit is directly answerable to the President. It will support the University Management Board in identifying and achieving strategic goals, prepare submissions to facilitate decision-making processes, and act as an intermediary to coordinate the activities of the university management, faculties as well as central institutions and facilities with regard to the implementation of strategic policies. Among other things, this will involve:

  • the reassignment of professorships as part of the overall appointment concept at the university (in accordance with Art. 17 [3] of the University Charter),
  • the coordination of review processes by the University Management Board of medium- and long-term structural planning within the faculties,
  • the development of detailed strategy concepts, particularly for interdisciplinary areas (e.g., internationalization, young researchers),
  • the formation of strategic partnerships,
  • the development of processes to ensure that recommended courses of action at the excellence centers (Gutenberg Research College, Gutenberg Teaching Council, Gutenberg Council for Young Researchers) are coordinated with the overall strategy at JGU,
  • dealing with aspects relevant to the German U15 coalition, i.e., the association that represents the interests of 15 large, research-intensive, and internationally active German universities,
  • the strategic Rhine-Main Universities Alliance.
